Gian Franco Kasper was unique in the world of skiing, and Val di Fiemme, Trentino, had a special place in his heart.
The former president of FIS, the International Ski Federation, passed away on Saturday leaving a huge gap in the sports world. He had been in hospital for some time due to respiratory problems and was not even able to hand over to the new president Johan Eliasch after deciding not to stand for re-election.
He was a key player in the development of winter sports and spent 46 years of his life at FIS, first serving as secretary general, then from 1998 as president.
Fiemme World Cup, the organising committee of the World Championships and World Cup races in Val di Fiemme, mourns his death and wants to remember him with the deepest sympathy. “He was a great mentor to us and supported Val di Fiemme when it came to awarding the three World Championships and the World Cup races to our valley,” said Pietro De Godenz, president of the Comitato per la Promozione dello Sci in Val di Fiemme. “Thanks to him we have made great steps at international level. He was close to us not only as a president, but also as a man, and we will never forget him”.
Bruno Felicetti, president of the Fiemme World Cup committee, remembers him as “a man of extraordinary intelligence and sensitivity, always available and ready to give advice to allow the organising committees to evolve and contribute to sport in general. His passing is a tremendous loss for the winter sports family.”
In 2009, on the occasion of the final stage of the Tour de Ski, the then Mayor of Cavalese Walter Cappelletto named him an honorary citizen of the town: “I’ve always loved Val di Fiemme,” commented Kasper. “That’s why I often come back here. I think Cavalese is one of the most beautiful vacation resorts and I’m honoured to have become an honorary citizen of this town”. Kasper was also a wit and after being awarded the citizenship, he added: “I hope that now I don’t have to pay taxes in Cavalese as well!”
Gian Franco Kasper, 77 years old, from Graubünden, had announced to the Fiemme World Cup committee too his wish not to run for election anymore, but had assured his great willingness to collaborate in future projects.
Everyone is now mourning his death; very soon a new initiative is likely to be launched in his honour in Val di Fiemme.
