RAIN OF MEDALS IN VAL DI FIEMME VIGANTS, SÖMSKAR, GHIDDI AND LINDBERG OK
First day of the Rollerski World Championships Gold for Vigants (LAT) and Linn Sömskar (SWE) Junior races dominated by Ghiddi (ITA) and Lindberg (SWE) Tomorrow the hectic 200-meter Sprint in free technique

Not even time to realise it, and the opening day of the Rollerski World Championships 2024 has already gone into the archives. In a Val di Fiemme targeted by pouring rain, the over 200 protagonists took part in the 10 km and 15 km (for Seniors) races Mass Start in free technique

As many as 31 countries are represented and, if Europe is expected to lead the way, exotic nations such as Kenya, Morocco and Mongolia were certainly a pleasant surprise. The World Senior title in the 15 km Mass Start in free technique went to the Latvian Raimo Vigants, who led the race always in the leading group, except for leaving behind all rivals in the sprint. Under the pouring rain, the Norwegian Amund Korsaeth and the Estonian Martin Himma seized a spot on the podium. Bitter chapter for Italy, with Tanel and Dellagiacoma who placed at the feet of the podium, a few centimetres way from the medal and at the end of a still positive race. Vigants was clever in taking the last 200 meters at the front, with Korsaeth making the long levers count and taking silver.

It was a show among women. After the first two laps, eight athletes separated themselves from the rest of the group: among them Linn Soemskar (Swedish and World Cup leader), Karoline Groetting (NOR), Ebba Stenman (SWE) and the Italian Nicole Monsorno, Maria Eugenia Boccardi and Stefania Corradini. Precisely the latter was able to conquer a heavy bronze thanks to a great last lap.

Among juniors, on the 10 km distance, Anna Maria Ghiddi finished a dream race, pulling ahead in the last lap of the World Cup leader Johanna Holmberg (SWE). The sixteen-years-old Emilie Lia (NOR) arrived 3rd instead, in her first competitive race. Then it was the men’s turn, with Jonatan Lindberg (SWE) who dictated over Denys Muhotinov (UKR) and Tilman Hartlieb (GER).

Perfectly guiding the set-up and logistics of such a widely successful international event was the 20-year experience of the Nordic Ski Val di Fiemme Organizing Committee led by Pietro De Godenz. Deserving a special mention are the dozens and dozens of volunteers, coordinated by Mauro Dezulian.

Tomorrow is time for the Sprint races on the 200 metres!
