From 14 to 17 January Val di Fiemme (ITA) will stage three FIS Nordic Combined World Cup competitions in the Ski Jumping Stadium in Predazzo and the Cross-Country Stadium in Lago di Tesero. A lot of races have been cancelled due to the pandemic this season, with only two World Cup stages held so far, Ruka (FIN) and Ramsau (AUT). Everyone is now looking forward to the only Italian stop on the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup tour, Val di Fiemme as usual.
Many important stages have been cancelled, but in the top spots of the overall standings there are the usual two protagonists, who are ready to challenge each other in exiting duels, with a third athlete who could have his say in Val di Fiemme. The current leader of the overall standings is Jarl Magnus Riiber (NOR). The reigning World Cup champion already stood on the top spot of the podium in Val di Fiemme, but in Ramsau he suffered two defeats against his long-time rival Vinzenz Geiger (GER), third place in the overall standings. Last year, the German was the only one able to beat the Norwegian on Italian soil, and next weekend he will definitely try to repeat his feat. The rising star Johannes Lamparter (AUT) is second in the overall standings. Will the Austrian be able to deliver yet another great performance and close in on the overall leader or his success was just a flash in the pan?
Italy’s Alessandro Pittin, Olympic bronze medallist at Vancouver 2010 and clearly the most successful Italian Nordic Combined athlete, came back to racing in Ramsau after a long stop. Before heading to Val di Fiemme, the whole Italian team is training in Oberstdorf (GER), where the World Championships will be held next February.
The racing weekend in Val di Fiemme will kick off on Thursday 14 January with the Provisional Competition Round in Predazzo. On Friday the athletes will compete in an Individual Gundersen, with ski jump on the normal hill (HS 104) in Predazzo and 10km cross-country skiing in the Cross-Country Stadium in Lago di Tesero. On Saturday there will be the Team Sprint, with ski jump in Predazzo and a relay 2x7.5km on skis in Lago di Tesero, while on Sunday the athletes will take part in the second Individual Gundersen held in Val di Fiemme, same format of Friday’s race.
